Kay BOUCHER David - deceased
West Linn, OR
Kay passed away January 31, 2008 of cancer at age 60. Kay Boucher was born Feb. 22, 1947, in St. Louis, Mo. She received a bachelor's degree, master's degree and law degree from the University of Oregon. She moved to Portland in the late 1970s and was a law librarian for Stoel Rives, where she worked for about 12 years. In 1993, she married Robert G. French. Survivors include her husband; stepdaughters, Julia French, Medora Cesarano and Maria Buschbach; brother, Robert Boucher; and eight grandchildren. [published in The Oregonian on 17 Feb 2008]

The following is an excerpt from the piece Joy Passanante read at Kay's memorial service

“Kay and Lynn and I as teenagers saw quite a few foreign films together and fell in love with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. The theme song from the movie, the English translation of which is “if it takes forever I will wait for you,” remained a theme song of the three of us. On January 31st, I was in New York City at a creative writing conference and had taken some young writers out for drinks. At a few minutes after what would have been 5 p.m. Pacific time, the piano player at the bar 3,000 miles from Portland began to play “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.” My eyes welled, and I lifted my wine glass in a toast to Kay and enduring friendship. It wasn’t until half an hour later that I found out that that was exactly the time Kay drew her last breath.”

I just celebrated my 60th, as most of us will this year. The most memorable part was that Coach and Helen Wagner along with Bo Walther made it to my party. Looking back from this age reminded me of the contributions all have made to enrich my life. My wife, Diane for the past 37 yrs., my son Keith (29) and my daughter Nikki (26). Whether we choose to or not, we are inevitably the co-authors of each others lives.

My wife, Cathy, and I have now been "full time" retired in the Blue Ridge mountains in NC for over 2 years where we enjoy hosting "summer camp" for our five grandchildren. Our "free" time in retirement seems to be even less than when we worked for a living; we volunteer at a local free health clinic, sing in our church choir, work to support a newly renovated county historical museum, and am involved in starting a local chapter of the Military Officers Association of America to support benefit programs for retired military personnel. Add to that many projects with fixing up the ol' homestead and going to numerous "cultural" events - the symphony orchestra and collegiate sports at Appalachian State University - and I'm sorry I didn't get started sooner! Anyway, my best regards to the Class of '65.

Ken LIPSITZ - deceased
Kenneth S. Lipsitz, a former businessman, concert promoter and environmentalist, died Aug. 7, 1993, at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Town and Country after suffering from multiple sclerosis. He was 46 and a resident of Frontenac. Mr. Lipsitz was diagnosed with the disease when he was 25. He led a varied and prosperous career, owning more than 20 different businesses. He started his first business - a leather goods shop - in 1967 while attending the University of Denver. A year later, he opened a similar business in Clayton called Hide Side. He later opened four other stores in shopping malls in the area. He later started Chrysalis health food store on Ladue Road and the Upper Half and the Lower Half boutiques in Clayton. He turned the operation of the leather shops over to his brother, Ted Lipsitz, and moved to Truckee, Calif. There he started a ski, mountaineering and leather goods shop; an ice cream parlor; and a restaurant. He ran those businesses from 1972 until 1978. As a rock concert promoter in the 1970s, he brought to St. Louis many famous singers and groups, including the Who, the Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Carol King, John Sebastian and Black Sabbath. All of his businesses were eventually liquidated when he became too ill to continue. Since the late 1970s from his wheelchair, he spent his time trying to save whales and dolphins from slaughter by humans. He was honored in 1987 by the Center for Environmental Education in Washington for his contributions. Mr. Lipsitz was born and reared in St. Louis. He graduated from Ladue High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Denver. Among the survivors are his parents, Abe and Marion Lipsitz of Frontenac; three sisters, Nina Pitkin of Springfield, Va., Babette Stein of Concord, N.H., and Rochelle Lipsitz of Washington; and a brother, Samuel T. "Ted" Lipsitz of Burlington, Iowa. [published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Aug 15, 1993]
